As of March 27, 2016, New York State has mandated electronic prescribing for all prescriptions. Electronic prescribing (ePrescribing; eRx) has shown the potential to greatly improve patient safety and cost effectiveness, but there are numerous challenges to the implementation. The ePrescribing processes–and, more importantly, the organizations that develop and support them–are relatively new, have evolved quickly, and are complex, especially to the extent that coordination across multiple organizations and data systems is required.
Due to the new eRx law, medical staff are no longer able to phone or fax in prescriptions to pharmacies. In the absence of being able to speak with a pharmacy staff member, and depending on the pharmacy the patient has chosen, this may occasionally result in a delay with prescription fulfillment.
Please be patient during this transition phase.
