At Genesis, we know how important every step of your IVF journey is — especially when it comes to choosing the best embryo for transfer. Thanks to new advances in embryo selection technology, our embryologists now have powerful tools to help identify which embryo has the highest potential for success. One of the latest innovations we are using is CHLOE, a time-lapse imaging system that gives us a detailed, moment-by-moment view of how your embryos grow in the lab.
Whether you are starting your first IVF cycle or have been through the process before, here is what you need to know about how embryo selection technology works, why we are using it, and what to expect.
What is CHLOE?
CHLOE stands for Cultivating Human Life through Optimal Embryos. It’s an advanced embryology tool that uses time-lapse imaging to monitor embryos throughout their development in the lab — from fertilization through the early stages of growth.
CHLOE helps embryologists assess two important aspects of your embryo:
- Morphology: how the embryo looks
- Morphokinetics: how it behaves and develops over time
By combining human expertise with CHLOE’s detailed video analysis, we can more confidently select the embryo with the strongest signs of healthy development for transfer.
Why Time-Lapse Technology Matters
Traditionally, embryologists have used periodic “snapshot” views of embryos at set times during their growth. But important moments can be missed — and removing embryos from the incubator, even briefly, can disrupt their environment.
With time-lapse incubators, your embryos stay safe and undisturbed in their warm, stable culture environment. A built-in camera takes frequent images that are stitched together into a video, allowing our embryologists — and CHLOE — to observe every detail of development.
This continuous observation gives us:
- A more complete picture of embryo quality
- The ability to compare embryos side by side
- Data-driven insights to support better decision-making
FAQs About CHLOE and the IVF Process
Is CHLOE different from what embryologists already do?
Yes and no. Embryologists already monitor embryo development closely, but CHLOE adds another layer of analysis — detecting subtle patterns that may not be visible to the human eye.
Do I have to be part of a clinical trial to use CHLOE?
Yes, CHLOE is currently offered as part of a clinical trial at GENESIS to help improve future embryo selection methods. Participation is optional and free of charge.
Will using embryo selection technology guarantee pregnancy?
No tool can guarantee pregnancy. CHLOE helps us choose the best embryo to transfer, but success also depends on many other factors like uterine health, hormone levels, and timing. Still, studies have shown encouraging pregnancy rates when embryo selection technology is used in combination with expert clinical judgment.
Can I use CHLOE without the time-lapse incubator?
No. CHLOE relies on continuous video over several days, which is only possible with a time-lapse incubator.
Does CHLOE pick the “only good” embryo?
Not at all. It simply identifies the embryo with the highest potential for implantation. The other embryos may still have strong potential for future use (like freezing or later transfer).
Does embryo selection technology tell you the gender of the embryo?
No. It does not provide information about gender. That is only possible if an embryo has undergone PGT (preimplantation genetic testing).
Can I see the video of my embryo?
Yes! We will send you a video of the transferred embryo via email — a special keepsake that reflects a big step in your journey to parenthood.
Will I be charged for CHLOE?
No, but there is a charge for using the time-lapse incubator and to get a video of the transferred embryo.
A Powerful Partnership in Your Care
CHLOE is not a replacement for your embryologist or physician — it is a powerful support tool. Your fertility team still makes the final decision about which embryo to transfer, but CHLOE gives them one more layer of insight to guide that choice.
At Genesis, we’re proud to offer this technology as part of our commitment to providing the most advanced, compassionate fertility care possible.
If you have questions about CHLOE, embryo selection, or your IVF cycle, talk to your care team. We are here to support you every step of the way.
