Starting a family as a same-sex female couple doesn’t exactly happen like the “birds and the bees” talk that we might have heard as teenagers. We see many couples who are interested in starting or building their family or even just hearing about options when the time comes. There are several major concepts that we discuss at the initial consult:
- Can we start treatments at home initially?
- Which partner will carry the pregnancy?
- Which partner will the genetic source of the egg?
- Will the sperm donor be a known donor or an anonymous donor?
Many couples have made these decisions prior to their initial consult whereas some are still undecided. Our team can help navigate you with these complex questions and explain the risks/benefits of different options. Sometimes there are medical aspects to these questions that benefit from further testing and exploration. Other emotional or social aspects can also be addressed by our reproductive psychologist, if desired. We also have several legal teams who specialize in reproductive law to whom we can refer you if you are considering using a known donor or if there are questions regarding adoption/parentage in the future.
