When Is The Best Time To Get Pregnant?

Searching the internet for “the best time to get pregnant” will result in a wide variety of advice. However, now that the summer is upon us, thoughts of starting infertility treatment may be pushed back by images of sandy beaches and barbecues. You may start to wonder if there really is a best time to try to get pregnant. Is fertility treatment best concealed with the excuse of summer vacation or snuck in between your work schedule? For school teachers, and others who need fertility treatment, summer vacations just might be the best time to get pregnant.

When should couples trying to conceive seek help?

Before trying to become pregnant, it is recommended that women consult with their gynecologist to make sure they’re in the best health possible. A woman’s health, weight and age all play a part in her fertility.

The majority of couples will conceive within the first year of trying. However, if a woman is under 35 years old and has been actively trying to get pregnant for 1 year, it is recommended that she seek assistance from a fertility specialist.  Women 35 years or older should seek assistance after 6 months, and women 40 or over should seek assistance immediately.  This is due to the fact that as the maternal age increases, the quantity and quality of the eggs diminish, with a stark decrease after the age of 35.  The lower quantity and quality of the eggs may make it more difficult for couples to conceive. However, there are many other factors that can contribute to a fertility problem.

What time of the month are women most fertile?

Women are most fertile during ovulation and in the 5 days preceding it.  When trying to conceive naturally women can track the changes in their body (average menstrual cycle, basal body temperature, and cervical mucus) to help predict when this “fertile window” occurs.  Having intercourse during this time can give the best probability of pregnancy.

During treatment with a reproductive endocrinologist, a woman’s hormone levels, anterior follicle counts, and uterine lining are monitored closely to track ovulation. This ensures the best chance of success, increasing the odds for pregnancy.

When is the best time for fertility treatments?

The start of fertility treatments are based upon a woman’s menstrual cycle.  Some women find that starting treatment is easier in the summer or during their allotted vacation time so they are not juggling work and doctor visits together and can focus on getting pregnant.  However, the best time to start treatment – or even, the best time to get pregnant – is when it is right for you.
