The Washington Post: “Freezing my eggs restored my sanity”

On April 2, 2015, The Washington Post published an article about egg freezing by Ellen McCarthy, a reporter for the paper – from her own experience. In the article, Freezing my eggs restored my sanity, McCarthy explains her reasons behind her decision.

“…for me, the decision to put my fertility on ice had nothing to do with professional ambition or putting off motherhood. It was a quest to preserve my sanity.”

Ellen was just thirty years old and had a great job, but was not in a relationship. She started doing the mental math of how old she’d be when she’d start trying to have a baby:

“Even if I meet the right guy today, a couple of years of dating, plus an engagement period and a little time being married means I’ll be in my mid-30s by the time I even start trying to conceive.”

She’d seen painful fertility struggles with some of her friends, and all this was making her worry. She felt pressure – from herself ! – to find this perfect partner immediately. This pressure made her worry that she’d settle for the wrong one, just to have someone. The panic really set in and began to affect many areas of her life – impeding her sleep, impairing her focus and making her feel incredibly desperate.

So after much research, she decided to take a leap of faith and freeze her eggs. She acknowledged that cryopreservation is not a guarantee of a baby in the future. But just knowing she had done something pro-active, took control of a situation she felt was totally out of her control, she was able to relax and finally enjoy her life. She even has some pearls of wisdom for single women struggling with their own biological clock issues. Click here to read Ellen’s full story.
